Welsh Colleges & Public Schools League
Welsh Colleges Women’s Tournament
Wednesday 25th January 2006
Eleven colleges from across Wales entered this year’s Welsh Colleges
Women’s tournament held at King George VI Playing Fields, Swansea, and
despite a cold and frosty start to the day, we were blessed with a full
day of sunshine, and plenty of exciting competition and goals galore.
The 11 teams were split into 3 pools, with the pool
winners, and best runner-up from all three pools emerging to the
semi-finals. The semi finalists were Yale College and Coleg
Meirion-Dwyfor, and Coleg Sir Gar and Coleg Powys who progressed as best
runner-up.
The semi-finals were extremely close, with both ties
having to go to a penalty shoot-out in order to determine the winner.
Yale College emerged as victors in their North Wales
derby against Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor in the first semi-final, and it was
Coleg Powys, who had possibly created the most chances during their
semi-final with Coleg Sir Gar who triumphed in the second semi-final.
The final was hotly contested, but the strength and
determination of the Coleg Powys team was displayed as they scored twice
to win the final by two goals to nil, and emerge as champions of the
Welsh Colleges Women’s Tournament.
Coleg Powys will now progress to represent Wales at
the British Colleges tournament, and we wish them every success in their
campaign.
Welsh Hockey Union Limited would like to thank all the
volunteers who kindly helped with the organisation and running of the
tournament. The success of the day was largely down to their hard work
and commitment, and also the cooperation of the colleges who played
their role in ensuring the smooth-running of the fixtures.
