YOUTH EVENTS
The Welsh Hockey Union recognises the importance of youth development in our sport and is committed to ensuring that opportunities are plentiful, and provision is of the highest standard. There are a number of initiatives currently in place to attract youngsters to our sport, and also to develop the skills of youngsters involved in playing, coaching, umpiring and administrating hockey in Wales. Our Youth Programme was recently commended by the FIH Youth Conference in Chile.

Global Marathon
This is an FIH driven activity to promote and develop hockey across
the World. Every participating nation organizes an event on the same
date every year in order to raise the profile of our sport. This
year’s Global Marathon will be held on 12th/13th May 2007, and the
theme will be released by the FIH over the next few weeks. Clubs are
invited to take part in our event(s), or to come up with an event of
their own to fit the theme, and feedback a report on their
initiative. This could be a great way of ending your season on a
high.

Hockey Course a real winner at Llangrannog
The URDD, Wales’s renowned Welsh language youth movement and a key WHU partner organisation, is starting to become a “hot bed” for hockey in Wales. At the “School of Sport” run by the URDD at their Llangrannog Camp during August, some 26 youngsters aged 16+ completed the WHU’s Hockey Organisers Workshop, which gives them the basic skills and knowledge with which to help out at their local hockey clubs, schools or URDD groups. Some 60 children from all over Wales attended the camp as participants, and all of these took part in hockey. To discover more please download the report provided by Helen Thomas, WHU/URDD Hockey Development Officer for Ceredigion.
