Regional Academies up and running

Our new Regional Academies for talented athletes in the U18/U16 age groups are getting up to full speed under the watchful gaze of the new Regional Academy staff.

The North Wales Academy operates out of NEWI in Wrexham (coached by Nigel Stanhope) and Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay (Steve Edwards, formerly the Head Coach of the Wale’s Under 21 Men’s team). The two centres are coordinated by the North East Wales Hockey Development Officer David Bickley.

In the South, sessions take place at the Welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff and Swansea University. All coaching and coordination for the South Wales Academy is carried out by former Welsh International Andy Gowman. Part of the new WHU Player Pathway, the Academies are designed to give talented athletes greater opportunity to receive regular quality coaching on quality pitches amongst a group of equally talented athletes.

Concentrating on the improvement of core skills executed consistently under pressure, the sessions will act as excellent preparation of athletes for long term success on the international stage. Selection for the Regional Academies is an ongoing process, and the Regional Academy staff will be increasing contact with club coaches as well as school and County coaches to identify athletes with the right skills and attitude to benefit from inclusion.
