Three Welshmen in GB over 50’s squad...

Three Welshmen in GB over 50’s squad
Bernie Wheeler, Steve Sparkes and Pete Martineau were all selected as part of the GB over 50’s squad which played in Exeter last weekend.

Barry Mills, Captain of the England over 50's and GB Over 50's Veterans Captain, put together a formidable squad to take on the current HA veterans champions ISCA in a commemorative match on the Saturday and a West of England team on the Sunday. Pete Martineau and Bernie Wheeler were part of the team which beat ISCA in a well contested game by 8 goals to nil. Solid defending by the Welsh pair prevented any ISCA attacks coming to fruition and gave the confidence to the midfield and attack for them to entertain the crowd with skills you would expect from a GB side. Steve Sparkes joined Wheeler and Martineau in the team on the Sunday playing in his customary position of Centre Forward. The game against a strong West of England side was hard fought. GB were always in control but lacked the finishing touches although they scored either side of the half time whistle with Sparkes putting the ball in the net for the second goal. Again Martineau was solid in defence and Wheeler controlled the left flank well preventing any right sided attack. GB finished 3 - 0 winners.
