Mixed International - England v Wales

Wales beat England 2-1 in Mixed International & also win 3 team tournament
In the annual Mixed International weekend held at Trojans HC, Southampton, Wales took on England and Combined Services (CS). As it was CS’s first excursion into mixed hockey, it was no great surprise that both England and Wales achieved comfortable victories. However CS improved with each game and held an England Select team to a 3-3 draw on the second day – they will be a force to be reckoned with next year! The scene was therefore set for a winner take all in the final match which would also see the winners take home the International Trophy.

Both teams seemed to settle fairly quickly with each of them probing out any weaknesses in their opposition. Despite England forcing an early penalty corner – not converted - it was Wales who struck first through a slap shot from Penarth’s Bridget Radice (15’). England tried to take advantage of any over confidence that the goal may have brought but the Welsh defence held firm. Some over zealous tackling earned England’s Rebecca Odlin (Reading) a green card which reflected the high tempo of the game. Both teams continued to attack at regular intervals with Welsh goalkeeper Rob Logan making some crucial saves from further English penalty corners. Wales held firm to half time but in 42’ Ben Allberry (Havant) converted a penalty corner with a flick high into the net which the Welsh defence could do nothing about. Despite the temperatures remaining high the match speed did not drop and with Wales restricting their opponents to a small number of chances it was Simon Geeves (Swansea Bay) after 65’ who scored with a fine off balance shot into the narrowest of gaps at the near corner – this despite playing with a broken knuckle sustained the previous weekend. With both teams reduced to 10 players at various times due to yellow card incidents, England were determined to score the equaliser to take the game into golden goal extra time. With three penalty corners to defend in the last 2 minutes with the last being awarded 8 seconds before the final whistle, Wales had to concentrate on defending their goal and when the ball was finally dispatched outside of the circle to end the game, the celebrations amongst the welsh players and supporters showed how much the victory meant. Both teams can take credit for making the match one of the most entertaining in recent years and all look forward to the return fixture to be held in Wrexham next year.

In the annual mixed fixture, Wales will be taking on England at Trojans HC, Southampton on Sunday 15th July determined to stop the run of recent defeats. Combined Services will also be involved with both International squads playing them the previous day. As the final part of their build-up, Wales will also be playing two fixtures against the RAF at RAF Valley, Anglesey the previous weekend (7th/8th July). The matches form part of a tournament hosted by the RAF and we are extremely grateful for their support and all are more then welcome to attend.
