Slazenger English Hockey League (EHL)
6th November 2007
Whitchurch lose again to remain 9th
Whitchurch slipped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to visitors Oxted in the Slazenger EHL National South, paying the penalty for failing to convert a number of good goal scoring opportunities. Slick passing and good movement allowed Whitchurch to dominate in spells in the first half but the experienced and well-organised Oxted defence stood firm, though Laith El Khatib and Jamie Westerman went close to opening Whitchurch’s account with good strikes and there was plenty of action in the visitor’s goalmouth as the Whitchurch forwards put pressure on the Oxted defenders at every opportunity. Crucially, Whitchurch only gained one penalty corner during the half, whereas Oxted, dangerous on the counter-attack, created three, well dealt with by the Whitchurch defence. Whitchurch struggled to find the same rhythm after the interval, though El Khatib went close from a defence-splitting ball by Jon Collis, and it was now Oxted applying the pressure. The deadlock was broken in the tenth minute from Oxted’s first penalty corner of the half, Johannes Kloess netting on the rebound after Whitchurch had blocked two shots at goal and Oxted missed a good chance to extend their lead five minutes later in open play. Whitchurch pressed forward for the equaliser, Joe Naughalty making some strong runs, and both sides had further penalty corner opportunities but there was no further scoring. Whitchurch remain in ninth place after this defeat, dangerously close to the relegation zone, and face a tough trip to Kent club Sevenoaks, 2nd in the table, this Sunday.
