MATCH SCHEDULE

Tues 24th July 2007

10.00 G Ireland 1 England 4
12.00 B Scotland 2 Ireland 1
14.00 G Wales 0 Scotland 2
16.00 B England 3 Wales 2

Boys - Wales 2 England 3
The opening game against England saw Wales operating a pressing game plan. Having soaked up some early English pressure Wales started to match their opponents in both skill and effort. However following some last ditch short corner defence Wales went behind from the ensuing penalty flick. England scored a second goal against the run of play late on in the first half. This seemed to spur the Wales team on and they in turn won a penalty flick following a flowing move the full length of the pitch. Rhys Gowman dispatched the flick into the roof of the net.
The second half was set for a tight battle and when after 5 minutes Ben Davies scored an open play equaliser the intensity and excitement of the match increased. Wales continued to try and press but were themselves pressed deep by the older England team. With 10 minutes remaining England won a second penalty flick which was coolly converted to restore England’s lead. Despite renewed attempts by Wales to grab an equaliser England hung on for a deserved victory.
Despite the final score line Wales can take some measure of comfort from the performance and the fact that all 18 squad players gained pitch time. The challenge for the Wales boys is now to pick themselves up for a tough encounter against Scotland.

Girls - Wales 0 Scotland 2
The first match in the four nations for Wales saw 15 of the girls play their first ever international match. It was always going to be fairly tough as this was the girl’s first competitive match together as a team. Scotland perhaps showed their greater experience exerting much pressure early on and despite Wales defending strongly with keeper Roseanne Thomas making vital saves Wales found themselves 1 down after 15’. Wales showed great character battling back and creating opportunities, the best falling to Xenna Hughes after a great run into the circle. However Wales failed to capitalise on their chances and went into half time still one goal down. The second half again saw great skill and determination from both teams however Scotland again came out on top after a goal 10’ into the re-start. Wales were not down hearted and produced a strong performance throughout the team and were unfortunate not to earn a result from their first game.

Wed 25th July 2007

10.00 G England 8 Scotland 0
12.00 B Ireland 2 England 3
14.00 G Wales 0 Ireland 3
16.00 B Scotland 2 Wales 1

Boys - Wales 1 Scotland 2

Wales’ second game against Scotland was as predicted a tough match. Wales started the game at a lower tempo and after only five minutes Scotland scored a goal in free play. As the half progressed Wales fought their way back in to the game.
The second half was a very even contest with Wales pressing to win an early short corner. The practice ground training produced dividends with a drag flick into the roof of the net from Robert Trem. However following this Wales failed to press as they had in the England game and allowed the Scots too much possession. With minutes to go Wales lost 2 players to yellow cards in controversial circumstances. Wales had to withstand intense pressure and with only 2 minutes remaining succumbed to a short corner.

Girls - Wales 0 Ireland 3
Ireland got off to a fighting start with a goal from a penalty corner within the first 5’. Wales battled back and the score remained 1-0 at half time. Wales made a bright, determined start to the second half and put some great attacking moves together and were very unfortunate not to make one count. Despite Ireland being put under pressure through many periods of the game they increased their lead to 3-0 after converting 2 penalty corners within 15’ of the second half. However Wales should look forward to their encounter with England tomorrow after another determined performance.

Thurs 26th July 2007

10.00 G Ireland 1 Scotland 0
12.00 B Scotland 0 England 2
14.00 G England 6 Wales 0
16.00 B Ireland 2 Wales 1

Boys - Wales 1 Ireland 2
Wales got off to the worst possible start, going a goal down after only 2 minutes and conceding another in the 13th minute from free play. Wales were not pressing the play nor playing as a unit. As the first half progressed Wales improved and the possession was more even and through a penalty corner routine scored a great goal by Robert Trem.
In the second half the welsh team were urged on by the crowd but despite the immense welsh pressure Ireland held on for the win.

Girls - Wales 0 England 6
Wales set their stall out in a determined way with a strong defensive formation. This proved a successful tactic as England struggled to make any headway. They finally managed to score from a penalty corner after 8'. A successful second penalty corner just before the end meant it was 2-0 at half time. Wales continued their strategy of defence and breakaway in the second half but in the end the strength of the England team wore Wales down. The final score was 6-0 but this was no disgrace to the less experienced Welsh girls.

Fri 27th July 2007

09.00 G 3rd Scotland 3 4th Wales 1
11.00 B 3rd Ireland 2 4th Wales 0
13.00 G 1st England 2 2nd Ireland 2
England won 5-3 on penalty strokes
15.00 B 1st England 2 2nd Scotland 2
Scotland won 3-2 on penalty strokes

Boys - Wales 0 Ireland 2
The final third fourth playoff was another match against Ireland. Wales started much better then the day before despite some injuries but after 15 minutes good pass and move hockey saw Ireland awarded a penalty stroke from which they scored. Unfortunately just before half time Ireland scored another goal from free play. In the second half Wales again pressed hard and despite some open play and penalty corner chances failed to score.
Overall the results were a disappointment but considering Wales were playing much higher ranked teams the performances were excellent. A measure of that improvement was the closeness of the games and the comments of the other national managements and their recognition Wales are again credible opposition at the higher levels of under 16 hockey.

Girls - Wales 1 Scotland 3
Early pressure from Scotland resulted in two penalty corners but the Wales defence was sound and held out. Wales counter attacked with a run down the right deep into the Scotland 25 meter area. Xenna Hughes crossed into the D and after the initial shot was saved Sian French slotted the ball home for a 1-0 lead. Wales continued to press for the remainder of the half but could not add to the score. Nine minutes into the second half Scotland equalised when the ball was not cleared by Wales after keeper Stefanie Jones made a double save. With the score at 1-1 both teams continued to press with the Scots earning a penalty corner which they converted to go 2-1 up. Scotland scored a third with almost the last action of the match again from a penalty corner to give them third place in the tournament overall.
Despite finishing fourth it was a creditable performance from Wales who were the least experienced of the teams in the competition.
