Vet's Home Nations

England land clean sweep
In the first ever Ladies Vet's (40+’s) Home Nations tournament in Swansea, Wales came away with an excellent victory over their English rivals. Despite going 1-3 behind by half time, Becky Fleck brought the home side back into the match with a well taken goal after 52 minutes. Ex-international Kate Morgan then turned the match on its head with two converted penalty corners in as many minutes. Wales defended their goal as if their lives depended on it and despite having to face 2 after time penalty corners, saw out the match to earn a famous victory. With England having already beaten Scotland 5-0, they took home the trophy on goal difference as Wales had lost their opening fixture (and first ever International) 0-3 to Scotland. England romped home in both the Men’s 45+’s and 55+’s tournaments recording victories against Scotland (8-1 and 8-0 respectively) and Wales (8-2 and 7-0). Wales finished as runners-up in each tournament with victories over Scotland (4-2 by 45+’s and 7-3 by 55+’s). In the one-off Women’s 45+’s International England beat the hosts 3-0. At the tournament dinner Welsh Men’s Vets Chairman Brian Minney, paid tribute to Bernie and Jane Wheeler for the immense amount of work that the couple had put into not just organising and running all the Welsh Vets teams but the whole tournament itself. It will be the turn of the Men’s 40+’s and 50+’s to appear at Swansea next when they play in their own Home Nations tournaments over 1st/2nd September.
