Welsh Cup Finals
2nd April 2007
Penarth Ladies and Cardiff provided the upsets of the weekend, both beating English National League opponents in their respective Cup Finals. There were also wins for Penarth and Colwyn Bay Ladies in the Shield matches and Howardian Ladies and Swansea Bay in the Vets Cups.
In the Women’s Cup, Swansea would have fancied their chances having beaten Penarth in both last seasons Cup and Premiership but an early goal from Penarth’s Caryl James seemed to unsettle them and despite having a number of chances their normal fluent style of hockey was missing. Penarth also had opportunities to increase their lead but with Swansea reverting to a more successful shortened pass approach, on the stroke of half time they won a penalty corner which Emily Scudamore slotted home to bring the scores level. Swansea did not continue in this vein and Penarth scored their second through a penalty corner from Bridie Davies with goalkeeper Ria Male being unsighted. Swansea continued to have chances but Penarth’s own goalkeeper, Angela Ninian made a number of excellent saves and with their older, more experienced heads Penarth ran out winners 2-1.
The Men’s Cup brought together the two Cardiff based clubs, Whitchurch and Cardiff. With both teams taking time to settle into the match, it was the National League side, Whitchurch who opened the scoring through a penalty corner from Alex Keating. This seemed to sting Cardiff into action with three goals from Brendon Noble and Philip Lowe (2) in a 9 minute first half period which took the stuffing out of Whitchurch. Noble scored his second early in the second half after an excellent individual run begun in his own half and with two other goals, including the third from Noble, Whitchurch could only score a last minute consolation from Laith El Khatib to leave Cardiff winners at 6-2.
The Women’s Shield final proved to be a swansong for Colwyn Bay’s Laura Houlston, in what could be her last competitive match as she scored the equalising goal three minutes from the end of normal time to cancel out the successful penalty corner from Newtown’s Emma Rowbottom. Extra time could not separate the teams and it was Colwyn Bay who came through the penalty strokes barrage to record their third win in four years in this competition.
The Men’s Shield final proved to be one step too far for the comparatively inexperienced Newport side that came up against an in-form Penarth. Being three goals down inside 11 minutes it was always going to be difficult to come back into the game and a hat trick from Dave Tipping ensured Penarth increased their lead with a consolation goal being Newport’s sole reply. Penarth running out 6-1 winners.
In the Women’s Vets final Howardian’s of Cardiff showed that their defeat of the reigning champions in the semi final was not a one–off in beating Dysnni 3-2. Dysynni opened the scoring through Sue Bowen which was immediately cancelled out through a well taken goal from Jane Standerwick. In the second half Howard’s took their chances to open up a 2 goal cushion and despite reducing the deficit through a penalty corner from Kathy Iffla, Dysynni could not find the equaliser leaving Howardian’s the winners.
The Men’s Vets was a repeat of last years final with Swansea Bay & Whitchurch again facing each other. At a match speed suited to their years it was Swansea who took the early initiative and opened their account through a Rob Blacklidge penalty corner. Whitchurch equalised on the stroke of half time though Kieran Dempsey and it looked as though a penalty stroke barrage was going to be the only way to settle the match until Swansea’s Richard Dunstan took matters into his own hand with a hat trick in the last 5 minutes of the match to leave the ‘Bay’ winners by 4-1.
