Llanfaes County Primary take National Cup
Over 150 schools and 200 teams entered the 2007 Welsh Primary Schools Activate Hockey Competition, with Powys entering 26 schools and 33 teams which means that over 330 children are now playing competitive hockey in Powys! As only 14 schools entered this competition in 2004 this is a massive 85% increase in 3 years.
Two Powys schools, Guilsfield CP School & Llanfaes CP School hockey teams competed in the Finals on Friday 29th June at Maldwyn LC along with 7 other Welsh finalists.
Llanfaes CP School won overall without conceding a goal. Sian Protheroe & Tracey Woods are really pleased with their team, who have put a great deal of work into training and have been fully committed to their hockey. Ryan Daniels and Ben Wigmore (Welsh squad player) proved to be a fantastic duo to get past defenders to score the goals as well as helping their own defence and GK.
The Welsh Hockey Union are supporting the development of grass roots hockey throughout Wales, which has seen some significant results. Hockey in Powys has really stepped up a level due to the U11 Dragon Sport Primary leagues, U13/U15 & U16 Boys and girls development centres running all over the County. With over 800 boys and girls having played hockey in Powys this season the 6 full sized ATP pitches in the County will be fully used!
