Match Day 1
Following the withdrawal of GDS Cascais (POR) the tournament will now be played on a round robin (all play all) basis. In their first match against one of the pre-tournament favourites, Valhalla (SWE), Howardians struggled to find their form and turned round 0-3 down. However they found their nerve after the break and recovered to 3-3, despite missing a penalty stroke. The miss proved to be vital as Valhalla converted a penalty corner awarded on the stroke of full time to run out winners 4-3.
In their second match of the day against Cankaya BLD SC (TUR) 'Howards' took an early lead against a team which included several international players but conceded 3 goals before half-time. Despite going a further goal behind early on the Welsh team fought back to 3-4 but could not find the equalising goal. With a little more luck, Howardian's could have had two wins instead of two defeats and will be looking to open their account against the pointless FHC Tirotex (MDA) on Saturday.

Day 2: Saturday 23 February 2008

10.00   FHC Tirotex 2 Valhalla LHC 7
11.00   Ukimerioni Kutaisi 1 HK Bask 10
12.00   Royal Victory HC 5 Cankaya Bld SC 1
13.00   Howardian LHC 3 FHC Tirotex 1
14.00   HK Bask 1 Valhalla LHC 4
15.00   Cankaya Bld SC 10 Ukimerioni Kutaisi 1
16.00   Royal Victory HC 7 Howardian LHC 5

Match Day 2
Howardian's got their first win of the tournament in beating FHC Tirotex (MDA) 3-1. Despite controlling the game from the start they only had a narrow 1-0 at half time. However a converted penalty stroke gave them some breathing space and with the game wrapped up after scoring their third from a counter attack they should have scored more from the chances created. It was not to be with their opponents scoring a late goal to leave Howards winners by 3-1.
The next game against Royal Victory (BEL) (the top ranked team) was likely to be the hardest so far so an early goal from Howardian's seemed to unsettle the Belgians. Victory eventually took the lead on a number of occasions but each time the Welsh girls fought back to equalise. Howards had chances to take the lead just before the break but could not find the final touch and regretted the spurned chances when they conceded 3 goals in a 5 minute spell. They kept fighting but despite a determined effort lost 5-7. Howardian's can take heart in that they have run the two top teams closer than any other opponent and will be looking to finish tomorrow (Sunday) with two victories.

Day 3: Sunday 24 February 2008

09.00   Cankaya Bld SC 5 FHC Tirotex 1
10.00   Howardian LHC 6 Ukimerioni Kutaisi 2
11.00   Royal Victory HC 2 HK Bask 1
12.00   Cankaya Bld SC 0 Valhalla LHC 4
13.00   Ukimerioni Kutaisi 2 FHC Tirotex 5
14.00   HK Bask 4 Howardian LHC 3
15.00   Royal Victory HC 4 Valhalla LHC 4

Match Day 3
Against the weakest team in the pool, Howardians played their worst hockey of the weekend but still ran out winners 6-2. Having taken a 1st minute lead they would have expected to have scored more than the three goals that they led by at half time but were unable to capitalise on the obvious difference in standard between the two teams. However the victory confirms their position in next years Challenge division but they will need to improve if they are to challenge for 4th place with one game left.
In their final game Howardians were for the third time in the tournament on the wrong end of a 4-3 defeat. A much improved performance from their first match of the day saw Howards take a 2-1 lead into the break and a well worked penalty corner saw them stretch their advantage. However with Bask needing to win to take the bronze medal they countered with a penalty stroke and two other goals within a frantic 3 minute spell to themselves lead 4-3. With tired legs Howardians could not find the one goal needed and ended the tournament in 5th place. One small consolation for the Welsh representatives was their being awarded the Fair Play Trophy.
