Four Counties Challenge
14th December 2007
U16 & U14 Four Counties Challenge Results
The Four Counties Challenge Competition reached its conclusion at a rain soaked Swansea on Sunday 9th December. This event was devised as an opportunity to pilot an alternative format for county hockey in South Wales, which based on the initial feedback from the coaches, players, umpires and parents involved, was positively received.
The format required each of the participating counties to play each other once before Dec 9th, and results from these games determined the draw for the Semi-final fixtures that would take place on Dec 9th (click here for details of previous matches). The team with the most points being rewarded with a fixture against the team with the least points, and the teams placed 2nd and 3rd lining up in the other semi-final. The WHU invited each team to submit match reports, team and action photos, nominations for best player, and instances of clean sheets, so that these could be uploaded onto the County Hockey Section of the WHU website.
Under 16
In the Under 16 age group, Glamorgan Valleys finished the pool stage in 1st position having won two and drawn one of their preceding fixtures. They maintained this form at Swansea, comprehensively beating both Afan Nedd Tawe 3-0 in the semi-final and South East Wales 4-1 in the Final. Amie Williams and Demi Jackson were two of the outstanding players in a strong, well organised Glamorgan Valleys side. Cardiff & The Vale and Afan Nedd Tawe battled it out in the 3rd & 4th play off game, which finished in a 1-1 stalemate, with Afan Nedd Tawe seemingly becoming more competitive with each game.

Under 14
Cardiff & The Vale finished the U14 pool stage in 1st place, having won all 3 of their pool games. They therefore lined up against Afan Nedd Tawe in the first semi-final, who failed to win any of their pool games - narrowly losing 1-0 to Cardiff & The Vale. The resulting semi-final was an even closer affair, with neither side managing to score a goal and Tony Lee Lambert in the Afan Nedd Tawe goal the game’s outstanding performer. The game had to be decided on penalty strokes, with Cardiff & The Vale the victors 3-1. The other semi-final was much less dramatic but of equal quality, South East Wales winning convincingly 4-0 against Glamorgan Valleys. South East Wales took this form straight into the Final, defeating favourites Cardiff & The Vale 3-1. Glamorgan Valleys and Afan Nedd Tawe couldn’t be separated in the 3rd and 4th play off, eventually drawing 1-1.

South East Wales U14 v Cardiff U14
Result: 1 – 3
Match reported by South East Wales
During the first half SEW held strong in defence, with Hannah Waterworth and Georgia Doolan tackling and clearing strongly. Cardiff created many attacking opportunities but were unable to break through GK Isabel Marsh. Just before half-time SEW gifted a hit out to a sharp Cardiff forward who placed the ball in the right corner.
In the second half SEW had more attacking moves, created by the energy and skill of CM Ellis Davies but the forwards were beaten to the ball too often by sharper Cardiff defenders.
Cardiff scored their second from a well executed corner onto the right post. SEW continued to fight and came back into the game with their own corner move finished by Emma Clayton. With 5 mins remaining Cardiff were once again attacking and demonstrated pace and experience with the final goal from open play.
Afan Nedd Tawe U16 vs. Glamorgan Valley U16
Result: 0 – 0
Match reported by Glamorgan Valley
Glamorgan Valleys captained by Ffion Jones started well. Glamorgan kept possession and were able to pass the ball cleanly out of defence. Their midfield were strong in the tackle and delivered the ball quickly to their forwards. For most of the first half Glamorgan were camped in the oppositions half. Both Rebecca Weeks and Carianne Barlow delivered crosses into the circle but even though we had many penalty corners we were unable to score.
To their credit the opposition defended well and in the second half came more into the game and created a few chances, one of which was well saved by the visiting goalkeeper Jasmine Taylor.
South East Wales U16 vs. Cardiff & Vale U16
(played 20th October)
Result: 0 – 4
Match reported by South East Wales
South East started with the push back but they couldn’t keep the ball for long. For the first ten minutes of the match they struggled to gain possession as the Cardiff team dominated the game. South East knew they had to improve their performance. Finally they found their feet and started to control the game. They started to pass around Cardiff’s players and for most of the first half the ball was in South East’s attacking end. The unstoppable Lucie Phillips skilfully dodged around their central midfield player and passed a good ball to Hannah Vowles. It was a great chance for them to score the first goal of the match. Hannah hit the ball directly at the keeper and Jane Davies caught the rebound but once again the keeper made a great save. Both teams were on the charge and weren’t giving up. Cardiff managed to gain a long corner and one of their strongest players received the ball at the top of the circle. South East started to worry as they tried their hardest to close her down but they weren’t quick enough. Cardiff’s player struck a smashing shot at South East’s goal and it hit the back of the net. At half time it was one nil to Cardiff but the gutted South East team hadn’t given up just yet.
The second half started weakly for South East but during the game they became stronger. Cardiff were also playing well and were defending strongly. No one had lost or won the game just yet but a pass into South East’s danger area gave Cardiff another goal. South East fought back viciously but still that wasn’t enough. As soon as Cardiff scored their third goal, a fourth followed. The South East girls managed to gain a short corner and with just a minute to go they had one last chance to score. Both teams were ready for the last shot of the match. Sophie Clayton received the ball at the top of the circle but the pressure from Cardiff was just too much. Finally the whistle blew to end the game and the disappointed South East players shook their opponent’s hands. The South East had a team talk and will hopefully bounce back up from this ready for the next match.
South East Wales U16 vs. Afan Nedd Tawe U16
(played 10th November)
Result: 4 - 0
Reported by South East Wales
The match was held at Cwmbran Stadium on a sunny Saturday morning. SE Wales seemed to use their home advantage straight from the push back with Emma Hammond finishing a great team passing movement with a close range goal in the first five minutes. SE Wales dominated the first half with Hannah Vowles making a great run from the half way line beating 3 or 4 defenders to set up Sophie Clayton with a one-on-one with the keeper which she scored in the bottom corner. Hannah was rewarded a few moments later, scoring from a slip on a short corner with a great slap hit into the far corner. Afan Nedd Tawe’s best attack of the half was firmly stopped by an awesome tackle by Vicky Jackson to prevent a three-on-one with the goalie. So at the half time whistle, SE Wales were leading 3-0 and on top of the game, never leaving the opponents circle without a goal or short corner.
owever the second half was much more physical. SE Wales defence kept strong against a couple of powerful runs from a number of Afan Nedd Tawe players to prevent them getting any clear chances. In the 65th minute, Sophie Clayton scored a goal from the top of the circle after some scrappy play to give SE Wales the win they very much deserved.
