Welsh Indoor Finals

WOMEN: NEWI, Wrexham - Saturday 26th January

MATCH SCHEDULE

Howardians 9 Wrexham 1
Dowlais 3 Penarth 2
Howardians 3 Dowlais 3
Wrexham 0 Penarth 4
Howardians 3 Penarth 1
Wrexham 1 Dowlais 8

In the women’s tournament on the Saturday Wrexham’s relative inexperience meant that they lost their first game against Howardians by nine goals to one. However they learnt quickly and in their second conceded only four without reply against Penarth. The three South Wales teams were very evenly matched – Dowlais beat Penarth 3-2 and drew 3-3 with Howardians. Penarth also lost to Howardians 3-1. These results set up the final game between Wrexham and Dowlais as the crucial result. If Dowlais could win by nine clear goals they would take the title. They started strongly and with ten minutes to go had powered their way to 7-1. However Wrexham drew on hidden reserves of energy and resolve and kept the final score to 8-1 and so Howardians successfully defended their title and will represent Wales in Europe in 2009.

MATCH SCHEDULE

  Rhyl  2 UC Cardiff 9

S/F Northop Hall 6 UC Cardiff 12
F Swansea Bay 7 UC Cardiif 1

Following the non-arrival of Cardiff & UWIC this meant that Swansea Bay and Northop Hall played to decide who went into the semi-finals as first or second in their two-team pool. It was an extremely competitive game with Swansea just edging it by the odd goal in eleven.
In the other pool a Rhyl side who were fairly inexperienced indoors acquitted themselves well in losing 5-2 to Wrexham and 9-2 to UC Cardiff. Probably the best game of the day was the one between Wrexham and the students – some excellent hard-fought hockey produced an unbelievable draw of 11-11.
And so to the semi-finals Wrexham battled hard but some indiscipline made their task even harder and they went down 7-4 to Swansea Bay. In the other semi UC Cardiff continued their high-scoring run in beating Northop Hall 12 goals to 6. This took them to 32 goals from three games – impressive indeed for a team that had hardly played indoor before.
However, in the final, their inexperience started to show as Swansea Bay moved into top gear and produced some very fine hockey in their 7-1 victory. They too retain their title and will also represent Welsh interests in Europe in 2009.
