MEN'S WELSH CUP - Semi Final
draw
Matches to be played on Saturday 17th May
| 14:15 | Swansea Bay | 2 | Cardiff University | 7 |
| 16:30 | Whitchurch | 4 | Cardiff & UWIC | 0 |
The first Men’s semi final proved to be a lesson in
finishing for Swansea Bay as Cardiff University trounced them 7-2. David
McGahon opened the students account with a 12’ penalty corner followed
by another successful conversion 8’ later from Nick Gough. Stalwart
Richard Jones pulled a goal back after 25’ but the University extended
their lead by yet another penalty corner goal by Duncan Courtney with 7’
to go to the break. A 4th penalty corner was scored by Kieren Zeale
after 41’ closely followed by a quick passing move resulting in Gough
doubling his account. The students were now playing open, attractive
hockey and their opponents had no answer conceding again to Zeale’s
second. Skipper Chris Nelson reacted quickest to an attempted clearance
to double the ‘Bays’ score but Cardiff Uni were to have the last word
with Felix Flower scoring the 7th and final goal.
The second semi final was an all Cardiff affair with Whitchurch playing
the only other Welsh team in the English National League, Cardiff &
UWIC. It seemed from the starting whistle that Whitchurch were
determined not to allow Cardiff time on the ball and thereby stifle
their quick passing moves and when Jon Collis scored from a penalty
corner after just 2’ the task facing Cardiff grew considerably. 13
minutes later and Mark Whatling had doubled the advantage. Despite
creating a number of chances, Cardiff’s normal free scoring touch seemed
to have deserted them and when Collis scored his second from another
penalty corner, Cardiff & UWIC could not seem to find an answer despite
being urged on by a vociferous crowd. A very competitive match finished
with a well taken goal from Adam Barker to give Whitchurch bragging
rights in the Capital City for at least 7 days until the teams meet
again in the Euro Qualifying Tournament in Swansea next weekend.
