CUP FINAL SPECIAL, Day 1Saturday 29th
April

Women's Welsh Veterans Cup
Whitchurch Saints: 3; Penarth: 4
On
the first of the weekend’s finals the holders of
the Women’s Vets Cup, Penarth took on Whitchurch
Saints in what was to prove an exciting match.
With Saints taking an early lead, Penarth had
difficulty in coming to terms with the
determination of the Saints and soon after the
break found themselves 1-3 behind. Pip Laugharne
brought her team back into the match with two
well taken goals and despite Saints coming close
on a number of occasions; it was Penarth who
broke the deadlock to score their third goal to
retain their hold on the Cup.

Men’s Welsh Shield
Cardiff University: 3; Bridgend: 1 (after
extra time)
The second match brought together Bridgend and
Cardiff University who have both just completed
very successful promotion winning league
seasons. In a fast and furious game, littered
with green and yellow cards, Cardiff University
held the early upper hand but failed to convert
their chances into goals. Bridgend took the lead
with a well taken goal and seemed destined to
retain the Shield won last season. However the
University won a penalty corner in the dying
seconds of the match which they converted to
take the game into extra time. It seemed that
the late equaliser had knocked the stuffing out
of Bridgend and despite players from both sides
seemingly suffering from cramp, two goals from
the University ensured the Shield was to go home
with the students.

Women's Welsh Shield
Colwyn Bay: 2; Bridgend: 2. After
penalties 2-3 (4-5)
In the final match of the day, a weakened Colwyn
Bay played Bridgend in the Women’s Shield.
Determined to make up for their Men’s team
result in the previous game Bridgend took a well
deserved 2 -0 lead and looked well on their way
to victory. However, the ‘Bay’ were not finished
and Laura Houlston claimed their first goal in
the fight back. Colwyn scored again and despite
tiring legs had all the pressure in the final
period but could not quite find the winning
goal. Extra time could not break the deadlock
and it was left to Bridgend to claim the victory
on penalty strokes 3-2 to leave the final score
5-4 – the first time they have claimed this
trophy.
