WHUA GRADINGS & QUALIFICATIONS

Umpire Coach Level 3

This Award is aimed at Umpire Coaches who have the desire, commitment and ability to improve the skill and performance of umpires up to and including international level. The Award offers candidates an opportunity to develop their own coaching knowledge and experience, as well as improve personal performance. It also offers the opportunity to assist in the continuing development of umpire coaches. Level Three candidates will have a detailed knowledge of hockey, hockey umpiring, coach education and the current trends in each of these areas.

To become a Level Three Umpire Coach candidates need to:

Provide coaching for umpires up to and including international level
Apply personal knowledge and experience to enable umpires to improve their own performance;

Observe, assess and provide feedback to umpires to help correct errors and improve their performance;

Improve an umpire's understanding of the national umpiring structure and provide available information;

Apply a variety of appropriate coaching skills, strategies and styles
Plan, organise, and control training programmes that are appropriate for individual umpires and umpiring groups or coaches;

Help umpire’s mental and physical preparation for the demands of 'event' umpiring at all levels;

Act as a mentor and assessor for level one, two and three umpire coaches;

Assist in training umpire coaches at all levels.

REGISTRATION

Candidates who would like to gain the Level Three Umpire Coach award should be able to demonstrate a sound working knowledge of the Rules of hockey and umpiring skills. A National Committee or Regional Umpiring Association should nominate candidates and provide a curriculum vita, including all relevant coaching experience, and submit to the National Chief Coach with the Candidate Registration Form.

ASSESSMENT

To become a Level Three Coach the following assessment will have been successfully completed:

Attend a coach assessment at a Welsh or International Hockey event over two days that is decided by the Welsh Hockey Umpire Coaching Group;

Produce a logbook that records all coaching activity and is handed to an assessor before assessment;

Coach a minimum of two umpires. One will be an accredited Level 3 badge umpire while the other will be an accredited international badge umpire. Coaching will take place in a practical environment at the two day event and will be supervised by an assessor - a Level Three umpiring coach. The candidate will provide performance feedback for umpires who are being coached after each session. Feedback will be supported with the submission of a written Performance Report. Copies of the performance reports will be submitted to the Assessor within 28 days of the completion of the assessment;

Be assessed during the delivery of a presentation or as a leader of a workshop on a pre-determined subject at either a seminar or conference. The presentation may take place at a separate event if necessary. The assessor will be the same for both the practical and presentation assessments.

MAINTAINING THE AWARD

Level Three Umpire Coaches must renew their registration every five years. To renew, existing coaches should:

Demonstrate ongoing involvement in coaching commensurate with the Level Three Award and by keeping a logbook of related activity. The logbook will need to be produced for verification whenever an authorised representative of the WHUA requires it;

Contribute to a national or international seminar at least once every five years.
