WALES HOCKEY ACADEMY
STRUCTURE
The Welsh Hockey Union operates elite development programs at regional and
national levels and at various age and ability in order to identify and
then to educate players through the player pathway. These Elite
Development Structures are designed to bring players through from early
identification of potential, through to the Senior teams.
U/13 Talent ID and Development – The U/13 program is a technical program
designed to improve individual skills and to introduce players to some
of the concepts of elite hockey. The program is primarily a regional
one, within the brief of our Regional Coaches, and provides
opportunities for young players and coaches close to home.
From the regional program, teams are selected for assessment matches and
a National Talent Squad is selected for a Development Camp.
Junior Academy – The Junior Academy is primarily a development team
selected from our U/16 program. Players are invited to attend Local
Elite Talent Squads (LETS) in regional areas, and then to National Elite
Talent Squads (NETS), before being selected to participate in the Junior
Academy. The Junior Academy is an important step for players as this is
where they first learn about the requirements of International Hockey.
Regional Academies – These are, as named, regional based squads of
athletes selected from our U/16 and U/18 programs that have the
potential to push through, beyond their current age group. Athletes are
selected from their International programs and given specific Technical
coaching in order to progress them further along the pathway more
quickly.
Senior Academy – Athletes are chosen for this program in view of their
potential for excellence. They work within a tailored program with
support from the Sports Council for Wales.
