INTERNATIONAL TEAMS - Senior Women

Women’s Program
The Women’s national team compete in Tournament and Test match series on a regular basis both at home and away. The prime targets are the Commonwealth Games (held every four years), the European Championships (held every two years) and the Celtic Cup  (www.celticcup.eu). Currently the women are in the Challenge Division, which will be contested in Zagreb in 2007 and are aiming for a strong performance that will gain them a promotion to the Trophy in 2009.

Programs are ongoing but are nominally based around the two year European Championships cycle. As with our age group teams, the priority of the first year of the cycle being continued technical and tactical development. Some of the players involved in the program are also participating in the U/21 European program during this first year in the cycle. The prime focus for this period is player identification and development, as well as a successful participation in the Celtic Cup.
The focus of the second year is a successful performance in the Europeans and the program is busier and focused towards increased competition, achievement of established goals and qualification for the Commonwealth Games.

Athletes have access to a variety of support staff including coaches, manager, physiologist, sport psychologist, physiotherapist, specialist sports medicine and central support by the Welsh Hockey Union Performance Section.

Test Match v France
The Welsh Women’s Squad is made up of a real mixture of youth and experience who will play 2 matches against the French National Women’s Team in Bourges over June 23rd & 24th. The squad hopes to move forward and develop their achievements and preparations in readiness for not only the Celtic Cup in Wrexham but also for the Europeans in Croatia later in the year.

Some of our younger talented players have stepped into key positions within the squad, one of which is Sophie Robinson who made a huge impact whilst playing for the Celtic Panthers in the GB Superleague Both teams will face each other later in July during the Celtic Cup so this opportunity will give us the chance to check the progress of the squad and individuals alike.

All the players are looking forward to making an impact on the pitch and progressing their dreams through the weekend’s competition as well as catching up with some old adversaries.

Match Report - Wales 0 France 2
A young Senior Ladies squad travelled to France to play in a one off International Game at the newly opened Regional Centre of Sporting Excellence at Bourges. In the morning session Abi Welsford pulled up with a strain to her hamstring and missed the game in the afternoon. Both the Squad and Management were surprised at the billing this game was being given as it was the highlight to a day that celebrated Women in Sport in France.

Following the Alps cup, the French team have already played a number of competitive fixtures this summer in contrast to the programme afforded to the Welsh girls. This lack of competition and lack of sleep failed to deter the girls as they started the brightest and but for timely interventions from the French defence they have could have found themselves ahead. Pippa Jones and Leah Wilkinson with the shots. As the game settled both teams failed to build effective attacks, with the ball won and lost regularly in the congested midfield. With only minutes left to half time the French managed a rare foray into the Welsh “D” and won a penalty corner. A superb strike from the top of the day found the corner of the goal at the top of the backboard and the Welsh found themselves unluckily behind at the half time whistle.
The second half started as the first finished with the Welsh on the back foot, some intuitive French play was rewarded with a number of short corners but the organised Welsh defensive team denied any clear cut chances. As the half wore on the Welsh Girls began to pressure the French defence and some tricky runs by Kayleigh Humphries and Sophie Robinson in the inside forward channels led to two clear chances. The first saw a strike from Emma Winch Winch role agonisingly past the post, the second a hurried strike from Robinson saw it unluckily hit Leah Wilkinson on the shoulder. As the Welsh pushed again to draw level a lucky break fell to the French, the player showed no mercy to her Celtic cousins and struck low past Michelle Thomas in the Welsh goal. The final whistle blew shortly after and the large crowd cheered with relief at their team’s victory.

The Sunday saw a practice game played between the teams at 9.50 in the morning, still tired from the previous day both teams made hard work of it. The game was won 3 – 0 by the French, again an unfair reflection on the game as the Welsh girls won many penalty corners but were unable to convert. Coach Pam Richards used this game to try players in different positions, and some different plays. Captain Pippa Jones had a fine display in Midfield and Mags Rees in the Welsh goal made some good saves and showed some encouraging signs for the future.
