INTERNATIONAL TEAMS - under 18 Girls

U18 Girls' Programme
The U18s target is the European Tournament held every two years. Currently the girls are in the Trophy (B Division), however, following their disappointing result in 2005 are aiming for an improvement with their ultimate aim being promotion in 2007.

The programme runs for two years with the priority of the first year being continued technical development while during the second half of the first year an element of tactical development will take place. This aims to advance the skills developed in the Junior Academy with emphasis on their continuation when under pressure and fatigued. The year will include a variety of fixtures including test matches.

The focus of the second year is tactical development and game play. Technical development will be maintained, however, it will occur within a tactical framework. The programme allows more fixtures and ‘A’ division opponents are targeted. The Welsh Hockey Union will aim to enter the squad into a mini tournament where the athletes can get a feel for tournament play. The programme finishes off with the European Tournament normally held in July.

Athletes have access to a variety of support staff including coaches, a manager, physiologist, sport psychologist, physiotherapist and central support by the Welsh Hockey Union Performance Section.

U-18 Girls in Europe

With the lead up to the European Youth U18’s 2007 in Prague, the Welsh U18’s Squad have had excellent preparation before their international matches. They played the North of England U21 team which resulted in a 3-3 draw and then after an exciting match against Scotland U18’s again a draw was the end result. Some of the key squad members will more than step up to the challenges that lay ahead for the European Tournament with strength throughout the squad. The Captains responsibilities fall to Hannah Richardson playing in defence, Alys Brooks as Vice Captain playing in mid-field and up-front, Hannah John leads the attack. All the players are looking forward to making an impact on the pitch and progressing through the tournament.
