County Schoolgirl Hockey

The Welsh Hockey Union recognises that County schoolgirl hockey has always played, and continues to play, a huge role in identifying and developing future international hockey players. Played on weekends at U18, U16 and U14 level, it has come under threat in recent years from the allure of senior club hockey and the lack of teachers able and willing to coach teams and reduced commitment in schools to team sports.

The WHU and the South Wales Women's Hockey Association are therefore supporting the running of a new competition format in South Wales, which can hopefully be extended to North Wales, whereby counties play each other once prior to a finals day involving every team, at a central venue.

The new format has certainly increased the excitement and profile surrounding the event, and is proving to be an excellent talent identification opportunity.

The following counties participate in schoolgirl hockey in Wales:

South East Wales Region (4): Cardiff & The Vale; Glamorgan Valleys, South East Wales, South Powys

South West Wales Region (5): Carmarthen, Ceredigion, Llanelli, Pembrokeshire, Afan Nedd Tawe

North Wales Region (6): Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Montgomery, Gwynedd
