Hockey in Secondary Schools and Colleges
The WHU recognises that the opportunity to play hockey in secondary schools and colleges is patchy. There is an established secondary school hockey structure for girls, although playing standards have not kept pace with the development of the game, and there is very little opportunity for competitive hockey in secondary schools for boys. Whilst the WHU can encourage the introduction of hockey in this environment, it is not resourced to fully regenerate it. Therefore the WHU intends to focus on 4 areas:
- Help improve the standard of hockey in schools where it is a core sport by facilitating the introduction of modern programmes for years 7 and 8 through the HDOs and Community Coaches.
- Support the Sports Council for Wales's 5x60 programme (www.5x60.org.uk) that helps to introduce or re-introduce young adults to the hockey at secondary school age through our HDOs.
- Help revitalise the County Schoolgirls competition. (Make this link to section 3)
- Ensure there is a clear exit route to clubs for those who wish to continue with hockey (see also Club-Schools Link)
