Enter your school into the 2010 hockey competition before Friday 26th February...

The Activate Hockey is the National Competition for primary schools is known well to schools in Wales. Primary schools enter the seven-a-side mixed knockout competition and play an area round in their county/region. The winning teams go on to a zone final with the winner represents their county/region in the all Wales Final which is held in Maldwyn Leisure Centre, Newtown in July.

In 2009 a massive 137 schools and two hundred teams entered the competition from across Wales.

Llanfaes Primary School won the 2009 Welsh Primary Schools Activate Hockey competition at an exciting final at Maldwyn Leisure. The school also won in the title in 2007. Llanfaes have done extremely well for reaching the finals for the fourth year and winning the title twice says Katie Hamer, Powys Hockey Development Officer. "It is great to see so many children playing competitive hockey – more than 2000 alone in this competition."

Sarah Thomas represented Great Britain at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and presented the trophy to Llanfaes School. Sarah became only the third Welsh female athlete to represent GB in hockey. Sarah started playing hockey when she was 12, and was very impressed at the standard of hockey on show.

“It was great having Sarah at the Welsh finals, as the players really looked up to her, and was available to chat, have photographs taken and sign autographs from a postcard to stick and even a bottom of a shoe!"

"Interest in hockey has really grown in the Wales over the last few years. This has been aided by the Dragon Sport leagues and skill centres that Dragon Sport Coordinator and hockey Development officers are working on. The Welsh Hockey Union has set up four Regional Academies to assist the development of young talented hockey players. Starting children playing hockey as young as 7 years old is important to the development of their skills".
